About us!

The Society was formed out of a one-off concert performance of ‘Iolanthe’, with narration, as a church fund-raiser in 1965. The performance was so well received that it was decided to produce a fuller opera, this time ‘The Mikado’, still with narration. This again proved very popular, and ‘The Friends of Christchurch’ and were asked to take ‘The Mikado’ to other churches in the district to aid their various fund-raising activities.

This format became the norm, some productions stretching to almost a year ‘on tour’. These early productions all took place at Christchurch Methodist Church schoolroom stage, most of the cast and team being members of, or adherents to Christchurch Methodist.

In 1973, as the productions were getting bigger and more ‘professional’, it was decided by Keith Bailey, who was the instigator, director, musical director and appeared in the productions, that we should move to Hind Leys School, where a bigger stage and auditorium would be more accommodating for us. It was also decided to stop ‘touring’, as the productions were now too big, with professional scenery and full orchestras, instead of a piano and drums and home made scenery. The company went from strength to strength, and in 1978 when the new Hind Leys Community College was opened, we decided to make use of their purpose-built theatre and facilities. In 1992 we became ‘Christchurch G&S Society’, with elected committee and officers. The Society was always, and remains, a group of friends enjoying rehearsals and each other’s company, (and a ‘pint’ at the Pied Bull after!) and the end product performing before a, hopefully, appreciative audience.
